Controlling the quantum stereodynamics of ultracold bimolecular reactions

چکیده
Molecular collisions in the quantum regime represent a new opportunity to explore chemical reactions. Recently, atom-exchange reactions were observed in a trapped ultracold gas of KRb molecules. In an external electric field, these polar molecules can easily be oriented and the exothermic and barrierless bimolecular reactions, KRb + KRb → K2 + Rb2, occur at a rate that rises steeply with increasing dipole moment. Here we demonstrate the suppression of the bimolecular chemical reaction rate by nearly two orders of magnitude when we use an optical lattice trap to confine the fermionic polar molecules in a quasi-two-dimensional, pancake-like geometry, with the dipoles oriented along the tight confinement direction. With the combination of sufficiently tight confinement and Fermi statistics of the molecules, two polar molecules can approach each other only in a ‘side-by-side’ collision under repulsive dipole–dipole interactions. The suppression of chemical reactions is a prerequisite for the realization of new molecule-based quantum systems.

Universal model for exoergic bimolecular reactions and inelastic processes.
From a rigorous multichannel quantum-defect formulation of bimolecular processes, we derive a fully quantal and analytic model for the total rate of exoergic bimolecular reactions or inelastic processes that is applicable over a wide range of temperatures including the ultracold regime. The theory establishes a connection between the ultracold chemistry and the regular chemistry by showing that...

We present a fully quantal version of the Langevin model for the total rate of exoergic ion-molecule reactions or inelastic processes. The model, which is derived from a rigorous multichannel quantum-defect formulation of bimolecular processes, agrees with the classical Langevin model at sufficiently high temperatures. It also gives an analytic description of ion-molecule reactions and inelasti...

The governing mechanism of surface reactions is a fundamental concern in heterogeneous catalysis. The Langmuir–Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism is widely accepted to control the surface reactions in many catalytic systems. This contribution derives and compares several important surface rate equations to evaluate their quality of fitting to the experimental data collected for a vapor-phase hydrogenat...

متن کاملDirectly probing anisotropy in atom–molecule collisions through quantum scattering resonances
Anisotropy is a fundamental property of particle interactions. It occupies a central role in cold and ultracold molecular processes, where orientation-dependent long-range forces have been studied in ultracold polar molecule collisions. In the cold collisions regime, quantization of the intermolecular degrees of freedom leads to quantum scattering resonances. Although these states have been sho...
